Europe outdoor swimming?

Hi, I am a high schooler traveling to Europe this summer with some friends. I heard that many lakes and pools are usually populated by local teens swimming - I know Europe is more open than the US, and was wondering if these areas are usually ? Or do people wear swimming attire? Thanks
